About Kerrisdale

Kerrisdale has roots dating back to the turn of the century, when it was originally named “Kerrydale” after the wife of the railroad owner’s hometown in Scotland. The name means “Little Seat of the Fairies.” The name evolved to its present day named “Kerrisdale.” Known for its upscale shopping village, which is affiliated with the oldest local business association in Canada, Kerrisdale and its village are the epicenter of the upscale neighbourhoods of Vancouver’s prestigious West Side.

Education

Maple Grove Elementary School (206/944) and Kerrisdale Elementary School (239/944) serve the residents of Kerrisdale. Magee Secondary School (65/289) and Point Grey Secondary (52/289) are the public high schools. Residents living in this neighbourhood are also very near to some of the city’s best private schools: Little Flower Academy (1/289), York House (1/289), Vancouver College (13/289), King David High School (30/289), Crofton House (4/289), St. George’s (6/289), and Immaculate Conception (40/944) are a short drive away.

Housing in Kerrisdale is a mix of single family dwellings ” both new, renovated, and older bungalows, as well as condominiums and apartments, many along major arterial routes. Upscale homes with large yards and small bungalows with rental suites in the basement are all available. Many of the condominium and apartment buildings are older, with a mix of low-rises and high-rises. Because of Kerrisdale’s hillside location, some high-rise buildings have beautiful views.

Location and Transportation

Kerrisdale is located on Vancouver’s west side with its official northern and southern boundaries at West 41st Avenue and West 57th Avenue respectively. Blenheim Street is its western boundary and Cypress is its eastern. A small portion of the Cypress boundary extends into the Marpole neighborhood along Cypress Street. Kerrisdale is neighbored by family-friendly and affluent neighbourhoods: Dunbar, Arbutus Ridge, Shaughnessy, Oakridge, and Marpole.

Kerrisdale is readily connected to the rest of the city by major bus lines. The 41 bus runs east and west, connecting residents to UBC, as well as the Canada Line Skytrain station at Cambie Street. Multiple bus lines run north and south, taking residents downtown in under half an hour. For drivers, malls, the downtown core, and the airport are very accessible.

Kerrisdale Business Association

The oldest association in the city, the Kerrisdale Business Association is responsible for keeping the neighbourhood beautiful. Its website notes that it’s also responsible for “finance, marketing and publicity, parking and the welcome wagon of Kerrisdale Village.”

Kerrisdale Village

Kerrisdale Village is a commercial hub for the neighbourhood. It is a community-centric stretch of upscale shops and restaurants that services a diverse population. Known for its charm and class, Kerrisdale Village is home to over 250 businesses, many of them owned and operated by members of the community.

Kerrisdale Community Centre

Kerrisdale Community Centre was voted the best Community Centre in Vancouver in 2015 by the Vancouver Courier. Jointly operated by the Vancouver Parks Board and its own Community Centre Society, the quality of this service reflects the strong community mindedness of the neighbourhood. It features an indoor pool, an exercise room, pool, gym, library and a myriad of programming options aimed at all ages.
