About Shaughnessy
Set amongst tree lined boulevards is this prestigious neighbourhood housing some of Vancouvers most stately residences. Its origins commenced in 1907 when Canada’s largest developer, Canadian Pacific, commenced construction for this planned community.

Shaughnessy was developed in three distinct stages.
First Shaughnessy
The initial development was First Shaughnessy whose boundaries were from W 16th to W 25th Ave and from Arbutus to Oak. Currently this area is being proposed as a Heritage Zone which would effectively ban any demolition of pre 1940 homes.
Of the 595 houses, 329 were built before 1940, therefore this proposal is very controversial.
Second Shaughnessy
Second Shaughnessy encompasses the area from W King Edward to W 33rd Ave and from Arbutus to Oak St. Within this area is Shaughnessy elementary school, Little Flower Academy, York House, Quilchena Park and Devonshire Park.
Third Shaughnessy
Third Shaughnessy commences at W 33rd ave to W 41st Ave and goes between Cypress and Oak St. Within this zone is the famed Van Dusen Botanical Gardens, a lushly landscaped 20 hectacre facility including elegant landscapes with plant species representing ecosystems ranging from the himilayas to the Mediterranean, from Louisiana swamps to the Pacific Northwest. Private Schools within Shaughnessy include Vancouver College, Little Flower Academy and York House.
Shaughnessy is ideally located for access to some of Vancouver’s most highly ranked schools. Top ranked private schools: Little Flower Academy (1/289), York House (1/289), and Vancouver College (13/289) are in the neighbourhood.
The catchment area for public schools within Shaughnessy include the highly ranked Shaughnessy Elementary (297/944), Quilchena Elementary (239/944), and Emily Carr Elementary. Eric Hamber High School (69/289) and Prince of Wales High School (65/289), both two of the city’s most highly ranked public schools, are also in the area.

Shaughnessy is a neighbourhood of sprawling estate homes. The average house price for the neighbourhood is 3.09 million dollars, Vancouver’s highest. The area features Neo Tudor, Federal Colonial, and Arts and Craft style homes with architectural homages being made to early American and British styles. Many of the lots are very, very large and some are bordered by large hedges. A bylaw established in 1981 placed an emphasis on the development of single-family homes so the neighbourhood is predominantly made up of these properties.

Location and Transportation
Shaughnessy is located in the middle of Vancouver’s west side. Granville Street, one of Vancouver’s main transit and arterial routes, runs right through the middle of the neighbourhood, providing residents with quick and easy access to downtown Vancouver or Richmond by car or by bus.
