Public schools in the north end of this neighbourhood include: Strathcona Elementary (568/944), Admiral Seymour Elementary, and Britannia Secondary School (233/289). Residents living on the south side of this neighbourhood are served by Mount Pleasant Elementary, Florence Nightingale Elementary School (896/944) and Vancouver Technical High School (107/289). Private schools in or near the neighbourhood include: St. Patrick’s (297/944), St. Francis Xavier (52/944), The Westside School, and Stratford Hall (69/289).

Housing

Mount Pleasant East has been popular for new condominium developments in the past decade. Heritage homes are famous in Strathcona, however many have been subdivided into units or become multi-family dwellings. Newer townhouses and duplexes have been developed in this neighbourhood to keep up with demand for affordable family dwellings. Space is at a premium here because of the location’s neighbourhood feel and close proximity to downtown.

Location and Transportation

Mount Pleasant East is located in East Vancouver and stretches between East Hastings Street and East 15^th Ave to the north and south, and Ontario Street and Clark Drive to the west and east. This location places residents within a ten minute drive to downtown Vancouver. Residents who live near the northern end of the neighbourhood could easily walk to work in Railtown, Gastown, or Crosstown.

Residents living at the north end of the neighbourhood have access to a skytrain station at Main and Terminal Street. Residents living up the hill on the south end of the neighbourhood can easily get downtown on a bus which connects to the downtown core and skytrain lines. Express busses to the East and Westside of Vancouver are available along Broadway. Vancouver’s most popular bikeways also run through the neighbourhood along West 10th Ave to the south and Adanac Street to the North. Portions of the seaside bikeway circling Vancouver connects with this neighbourhood on the east end of False Creek, which allows cyclists or joggers access to Yaletown, the West End and even Stanley Park.

Recreational offerings in Mount Pleasant East are bountiful. Not only are the residents connected to some of the most popular bike routes in the city, but some of the city’s most popular rock climbing gyms are located within the boundaries. Ample park space is available to residents, as is a brand new community centre located at intersection of Main Street and East 8^th Ave with programming for all ages. Just a short walk to the west places residents at False Creek, a popular hub for kayakers and paddlers.

Dude Chilling Park

Formerly known at Guelph Park, Dude Chilling Park is a humorously named green space in East Vancouver. It’s popular with residents and its name reflects the sense of humour of local residents.

Local Businesses

Mount Pleasant East is bisected by Main Street, a hotbed of young, hip local businesses, bars, art galleries and spaces that reflect the population. Pulp Fiction, a famous independent bookstore, Prado, a hip cafe, The Foundation, a popular vegetarian restaurant, The Fox, a restored night club, and F as in Frank, a trendy vintage store are just a small selection of the hip businesses which service this artistic neighbourhood.
