About The West End

Vancouver’s West End is an infamous neighbourhood in Canada. With access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, quiet tree lined streets, a bustling and vibrant nightlife, parks and public spaces as well as a small, community-centric vibe, it’s not wonder that The West End received “The Great Neighbourhood” award from the Canadian Institute of Planners in 2015. Home to Vancouver’s LGBTQ community, the residents of this neighbourhood are inclusive and diverse. With the majority of its buildings built pre-1980, the West End has a more laid back vibe.

Education

Lord Roberts Elementary School (523/944) sits within the neighbourhood, and King George Secondary School (268/289) is just a short walk away. If Independent schools are what you’re after, Alexander Academy, Pattison High School, Anchor Point Montessori School, and The Westside School are all in the downtown core. Madrona School, Fraser Academy, and St. John’s School (10/289) are all a short drive across the Burrard Street Bridge. Living in the West End places you within a reasonable driving distance of St. George’s (6/289) or Crofton House (4/289).

Housing

The West End reflects a real diversity in its offerings. High-rises, apartments, condominiums, heritage buildings constructed in the 1920s, single-family dwellings and townhomes are all available, though not inexpensive given the amenities and power of this wonderful neighbourhood. Pockets of it have been slated for redevelopment, with more high-end condominiums being constructed, including a luxury 58 unit building on Jervis street in the heart of Davie Village. To keep things in perspective, approximately 80% of the area’s 45,000 residents are renters.

Location and Transportation

The West End is located on the west side of Vancouver’s downtown core, bordered by the ocean on two sides and Stanley Park on the other. It has the second highest walk score of any Neighbourhood in Vancouver. (Walk score is a ranking of a neighborhood’s accessibility for completing daily errands without a car.) Its transit score is also quite high, with a network of busses connecting residents to the downtown core and its plentiful skytrain lines. Many of the streets are traffic calmed, which keeps them quiet and safe for residents who prefer to walk or ride bikes. The West End is a paradise for anyone who wants to capture that community feel and still live downtown.
