Education

There are three public elementary schools in Sunset: John Henderson Elementary School (914/944), Pierre Elliot Trudeau Elementary, and Walter Moberly Elementary. Public secondary schools in the neighbourhood David Thompson Secondary (193/289) or John Oliver Secondary (193/289). Independent options nearby include: St. Andrew’s School (75/944) and Corpus Christi School (1/944).

Housing

The majority of the housing in this neighbourhood are single family detached homes and low rise apartment buildings. The houses here reflect the working-class roots of the neighbourhood, with many Vancouver Special-style houses and bungalows. The area is also popular with redeveloped homes, so you’ll see newer properties here as well.

Location and Transportation

South Vancouver is bordered to the North and South by East 49^th Ave and the Fraser River respectively. It stretches between Ontario Street and Knight Street to the East and West. Ontario Street is a popular traffic-calmed bike route that connects residents with many other bike routes in the city. Knight Street is a busy arterial road and trucking route. The road turns into a bridge over the Fraser River and continues into Richmond, connecting residents with the shopping and culture hub of that city.

The area itself is located with a short twenty-five drive of downtown Vancouver. It’s also close to Burnaby. Residents have access to public transportation along main arterial routes, some residents living on the West side of the neighbourhood living just a short walk from the Canada Line Skytrain stations at W. 49^th Avenue, and Southwest Marine Way.

South Vancouver Neighbourhood House

Located just outside of the eastern boundaries of the Neighbourhood, South Vancouver Neighbourhood House is a community hub for residents of the area. The space has many initiatives including: The South Vancouver Senior’s Network, Out of School care for young children, and settlement services for newcomers to Canada.

Sunset Community Centre and Ice Rink

The Sunset Community Centre is a community hub part owned by the City of Vancouver and part owned by the Sunset Community Association, an organization run by residents of the neighbourhood. This beautiful building is a vibrant community space with fitness classes, recreational facilities, child care, and more. The community group operates the nearby Ice Rink as well.

Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre

Also jointly owned by the city of Vancouver and the Sunset Community Association, this exciting arts hub is, as stated on their website, “a place for intercultural connections, a gathering place for the community to experience art in many forms.”

Shopping

Sunset encapsulates both Main and Fraser Streets which both are home to active commercial spaces with shops, produce markets, grocery stores, used bookstores and more. A Great Canadian Superstore sits at the south end of the neighbourhood, which provides residents with affordable groceries. Other Big Box style stores, like Best Buy are within the neighbourhood boundaries.
