About Oakridge

Oakridge is a neighbourhood near the south end of Vancouver stretching between West 41st and West 57th, Ontario Street and Granville Street. It has a multicultural population and was developed in the 1950s, making it one of South Vancouver’s younger neighbourhoods. Oakridge Mall, located at West 41st and Oak Streets, is one of the city’s largest shopping malls and recently underwent a complete revitalization. The City of Vancouver has also planned to introduce more high-rise developments around that area. Langara College, a degree-granting public college has a large campus between 49th Avenue and 58th Avenue for its 21,000 students.

Education

There are plenty of elementary school options available to the residents of Oakridge. Public elementary schools are: Sir William Osler (140/944), Dr. Annie B. Jamieson Elementary (150/944), Sir William Van Horne Elementary School (523/944), Sir Wilfred Laurier (337/944), and J.W. Sexsmith Elementary School (497/944). Public Secondary schools include Sir Winston Churchill (69/289), Magee Secondary (65/289) or Eric Hamber Secondary (69/289), depending on the resident’s address. Private options in the neighbourhood include: King David High School (30/289) and Vancouver College (13/289). Little Flower Academy (1/289), Crofton House (4/289), and Vancouver Talmud Torah (140/944) are just a short drive away.

Location and Transportation

Oakridge is bordered by arterial routes: Oak Street and Cambie Street running north and south, and West 41st Ave and West 49th Ave running east and west. As such, convenient public transportation and driving routes are available, connecting residents to the rest of the city. Downtown Vancouver is a short skytrain ride away, as is UBC. The airport, and Richmond are also easily accessible by car or by skytrain along the Canada Line.

Housing In Oakridge

Oakridge is one of Vancouver’s younger neighbourhoods and as such, many single family dwellings were built in the bungalow, rancher, or split-level styles. Higher density housing, including high-rise condominiums, have been built along the main arterial routes, closer to the transportation hubs at West 41st and Cambie Street. In 2014, The City of Vancouver approved a rezoning of the area around Oakridge mall which includes the possible construction of 14 high rise towers, between 9 and 44 stories tall which will drastically increase housing availability.

Oakridge Centre

Oakridge Centre is one of Vancouver’s largest shopping malls, with over 150 stores including a grocery store, a public library, and a senior’s centre. The City of Vancouver is considering an additional expansion of the space to add additional retail, commercial, and residential spaces.

Marpole-Oakridge Community Centre

At the border between Oakridge and Marpole sits this family centric community centre, which services residents of both areas. The centre offers day camps, recreational activities for all ages, ESL classes, and more.
