Schools

Students living in this neighbourhood attend either Lord Roberts Elementary School (523/944) or Elsie Roy Elementary (355/944) depending on their address. For high schools, the public option is King George Secondary (268/289), which is located in the downtown core. BCIT and SFU, two Universities that offer professional degrees, have downtown campuses here. Independent schools nearby include: Century High School, Madrona School, Pattison High School, Anchor Point Montessori School, Columbia College, St. Francis Xavier School (52/944) and the Westside School. There are also numerous ESL schools in the downtown area.

Housing

Downtown West is populated, almost exclusively, by high-rise apartments and condominiums. A small selection of townhomes are also available, though competition for these spaces is high. Downtown Vancouver is a small area and the land is highly valued. Many buildings are new and have desirable amenities: gyms, bowling alleys, and rooftop patios, are not uncommon. Prices mirror the accessibility and glamour of the downtown core.

Location and Transportation

Downtown West sits at the centre of the downtown core and is the most urban neighbourhood in Vancouver. As such access to nearly everything is at your fingertips ” fans of the outdoors can access beaches at the neighbourhood’s southern boundary, with Sunset Beach and English Bay just a short walk away. The city’s seaside walkways and bikeways are also nearby, with connecting bike routes in all directions passing through Downtown West.

Downtown West is defined to the north by the Burrard Inlet and to the south by Pacific Avenue, which is only a few blocks away from False Creek. To the east, it encompasses part of the city’s infamous Gastown neighbourhood, and ends at Carall Street. To the West it stops at Burrard Street, where Coal Harbour and the city’s West End Neighbourhood begin.

Downtown West’s urban surroundings make it ideally located with a myriad of public transportation options that make all areas of downtown and the lower mainland accessible for residents. Waterfront Station sits at the neighbourhood’s northern most point, which is a hub connecting both skytrain lines, with airport access twenty minutes away. The station also provides bus and seabus access, as well as a shuttle to the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay.

Neighbourhood Highlights

Stanley Park

Stanley Park is just a short walk or bike ride away. This award winning park has an eighteen hole pitch and putt golf course, tennis course, a yacht and rowing club, three beaches, hiking trails and a pool. In the summer, the park screens free outdoor movies.

Gastown

Vancouver’s beautiful heritage neighbourhood, with its cobblestoned streets and twinkling lights, is an excellent place to take an evening stroll, grab a bite to eat or a cocktail, and check out some live music.

Shopping

Shopping in downtown Vancouver is bountiful and there are hundreds of stores, both in malls and on the street. The famous Robson Street is packed with stores, including the original locations for Aritizia and Lululemon. A brand new Nordstrom Store recently opened in the renovated downtown mall, Pacific Centre.
