About False Creek

Named for the creek which is borders, the False Creek neighbourhood stretches from Burrard to Ontario street along the water, encompassing Vancouver’s infamous Granville Island, and the new Olympic Village development. The Olympic Village development, now known as Southeast False Creek, is the second neighbourhood in the world to meet the Platinum LEED Standard for Sustainability. The city’s goal for the development, which it hopes to meet by 2020, will make it home to between 12,000-16,000 people and will see the creation of 3-5 childcare facilities and a new elementary school, amongst many other improvements.

Education

False Creek has its own Elementary School. High School students living in the area are in the catchment for Kitsilano Secondary School (85/289). A new elementary school is planned and the city hopes to have it built by 2020. Nearby private school options include: Blessed Sacrament School (120/944), St. Patrick’s Elementary School and High School (103/289), St. Francis Xavier School (52/944), and Columbia College. Top ranked all girls’ schools, Little Flower Academy (1/289) and York House (1/289) are a short commute away.

With beautiful waterfront condominiums and apartment buildings, it’s no wonder that living on False Creek is so popular. Because of the demand for housing, only higher density options are available. It’s all condominiums and townhomes, intermingled with social housing offerings to keep the diversity of the neighbourhood alive. The recently redeveloped Olympic Village development at the eastern end of the neighbourhood feature units built for the 2010 Olympics. Many new developments are still under construction, most which provide underground parking and amenities.

Location and Transportation

With False Creek at its northern boundary and 6th Avenue to its south, this neighbourhood is thin and hugs the waterfront from Burrard Street to Ontario. Connected along the water by bikeways that meet routes at all three bridges headed downtown, it’s no wonder so many young professionals are settling in this area. Downtown access is also readily available by bus, aquabus, or by the Olympic Village skytrain next to the Cambie Street Bridge.

Granville Island

One of the eminent tourist attractions in the city, Granville Island is home to restaurants, theatres, art galleries, a beautiful Public Market, some of the best seafood in the province, as well as public art pieces.
